Failed payment and retries

Updated

When a renewal is declined your subscription moves to a past due state and we email you. What happens next depends on why the card was declined.

Steps

  1. Open the email we sent you, or sign in and go to Account, then Billing.
  2. Open the Payment methods tab and add a card that works.
  3. Select Make default on the new card.
  4. Remove the old card if you no longer want it on file.
  5. If your email said we will try again automatically, you are done. The next retry uses your new default card.
  6. If your email asked you to update your payment method, there is no automatic retry. Contact support once the new card is in place and we will re-run the charge for you.

Good to know

  • For a temporary decline such as insufficient funds, we try the charge again twice, three days and seven days after it first failed, and email you each time. If none of them go through, your access stops on day eight.
  • For a card problem such as an expired, invalid, or declined card, trying the same card again will not help, so we do not retry. We email you on the day it fails, then again on day three and day five, and your access stops on day six if the charge has not gone through.
  • In that case, adding a working card is not enough on its own. Ask us to re-run the charge before day six and your membership carries straight on.
  • If the bank reports the card as stolen or unauthorized, we stop straight away and your access stops immediately. Add a different card and contact support to get going again.
  • If a retry succeeds before the deadline, everything goes back to normal by itself and you do not need to re-subscribe.
  • Your history, saved classes, and notes are never removed while a payment problem is being sorted out.
